About Greengate Biogas

Pioneering Biomethane Production from Agricultural Waste

Toender Biogas 1 1

Greengate Biogas develops, builds and operates biomethane plants that process manure and organic waste converting them into biomethane to be injected in the national gas grid and organic fertilisers to be recirculated to local farmers. Greengate Biogas is developing multiple sites across Ireland with a target to produce approximately 1.8 TWh of biomethane per year representing nearly 30% of Ireland’s biomethane production target for 2030.

Can Biomethane from Agricultural Waste Solve Ireland’s Energy and Environmental Challenges?

Greengate Biogas is at the forefront of Ireland's sustainable energy revolution, transforming agricultural waste into clean, renewable biomethane and organic fertilisers. This process not only reduces the country's dependence on fossil fuels but also repurposes waste into valuable resources, contributing significantly to the decarbonisation of Ireland's gas supply. Committed to meeting 30% of Ireland’s 2030 biomethane production target, Greengate Biogas is a pivotal player in achieving national renewable energy targets and addressing environmental challenges.

The agricultural sector is the largest source of emissions in Ireland, accounting for over 38% of all emissions in 2022. With EU and Irish Government mandating a GHG emission reduction target of 25% from the agricultural sector by 2030 (compared to 2018 levels), Greengate Biogas is poised to make a significant impact. By collecting and processing over 3.5 million tonnes of manure annually, Greengate Biogas will play a crucial role in reducing GHG emissions and helping Ireland meet its ambitious climate goals.

Nitrate pollution in Ireland's watercourses is a growing challenge for both farmers and the wider community. Greengate Biogas is committed to helping farmers store, manage, and recycle their manure more effectively, reducing unnecessary spreading and the risk of nitrates entering the water supply. By doing so, Greengate Biogas assists farmers in complying with EU regulations concerning nitrate pollution, thereby safeguarding water quality and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

With Ireland's natural gas supply in decline, the nation has set an ambitious goal to produce 5.7 TWh of biomethane by 2030. Domestically produced biomethane from Greengate Biogas, which will meet 30% of this target, offers a long-term solution for energy security. This zero-carbon fuel can be utilised in transport, industry, homes, and businesses, providing a sustainable and reliable energy source that contributes significantly to Ireland's renewable energy objectives.

Greengate Biogas is making a significant impact in Ireland by fostering expert knowledge in the biogas sector and generating employment. This not only contributes to the local economy but also sets the stage for future investments, signalling a robust growth trajectory for the Irish biomethane industry. By collaborating with local farmers, supporting the potential establishment of feedstock co-ops, Greengate Biogas is creating a sustainable business model that benefits the agricultural community and the environment alike.
